Mesh and range extenders
Two ways to get Wi-Fi into the corners of a bigger house, and which works better.
The short version
A range extender picks up the signal and repeats it, which can halve your speed. A mesh system is several matching units that work as one network and pass your device from one to the next. Either way, the best fix is a cable between the units. It builds on how Wi-Fi works.
I always assumed a Wi-Fi booster made the signal stronger.
It cannot. It can only repeat what it hears.
A repeater is only as good as the signal it receives.
Range extenders
An extender receives the router signal and rebroadcasts it. Some use the same radio band to talk to the router and your devices, sharing airtime between both links; this can greatly reduce available speed. Dual-band models may reserve one band for the connection back to the router. If the extender sits in a weak-signal spot, it will repeat a weak signal.
Place one about halfway between the router and the dead spot, where the signal is still good.
Mesh systems
A mesh is a set of units, usually two or three, designed to work together under one network name. They coordinate to help devices connect through a suitable unit as you move around. The device and network decide when to switch; it is not always a seamless handover.
Better mesh systems use a separate radio channel reserved for talking to each other, which avoids the halving. Some can also be joined by an Ethernet cable, which is faster and more reliable than any radio link.
Which to choose
Extender
Fills one dead spot, usually at a loss of speed.
Mesh
Covers the whole house with one network that hands you over.
Wired backhaul
Fast and steadyAn Ethernet cable between units avoids using Wi-Fi airtime for their connection.
Key takeaways
- An extender repeats; it does not strengthen.
- Put it halfway, not in the dead spot.
- A mesh makes one network from several units.
- A cable between units is faster than radio.
Now you know.
An extender repeats the signal.
A mesh hands you over between units.
A cable between them is best.
